One Year On

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 One day in May 2008, I was proud as proud could be
My team had won for the first time, at the famous Wemb(er)ly
It wasn’t too long after that, we got news we didn’t want to hear
Our ‘hero’, Liam Dickinson, would not be playing for us next year

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The 11 starters and 5 named subs, would go down in County history
But before a ball was kicked this season, we’d lost another three
Logan, Smith and ‘proudy’ moved on, then Gaz Owen was sent to Devon
Within a few months of that glorious day, 16 had become 11

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The New Year came, another ‘hero’ went, as ‘jaybo’ found a new home
And soon after that we said goodbye as Gleeson came to the end of his ‘loan’
We ‘ordinary’ fans found it hard to take, as the 16 were now down to 9
Although in the midst of all the change, the ‘new’ team were doing fine

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Off the pitch there were stories of debt, and boardroom problems did unfold
So it came as no surprise to us, when Jimmy Mac and ‘Pilks’ were sold
As the team slid down the league, amidst rumours of ‘administration’
Gary Dicker left for Brighton, to help them in their fight against relegation

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 So as the season came down to a close, and our club were in a mighty fix
Just one year on from that glorious day our 16 was down to 6
The ‘administrator’ moved in, we lost ten points, and only just survived
But it wasn’t long after that final day, that the vultures had arrived

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Our ‘local’ boy, young Tommy Rowe, was ‘stolen’ by the ‘posh’
They even admitted afterwards, he should have cost them loads more ‘dosh’
With Leon moving on to join the ‘pools’, our ‘hero’ count is down to 4
Although if rumours are to be proven true, another one will soon be through the door

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 To add salt to all our wounds, they ‘sacked’ Jim Gannon, along with all his staff
And they call Stockport County ‘the friendly club’, now that really is a laugh
What makes it worse, is the lack of news, of whether or not the club will live
But one thing’s for sure, as long as I breathe, those at fault I won’t forgive

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 So all you fans who have enjoyed your trip, to Wembley this time around
Don’t get too carried away with your team’s success, keep your feet upon the ground
Because the 16 players who made us all so proud, have mostly gone on their way
Our club is completely unrecognisable, just one year on from that glorious day

Notes

Stockport County won the ‘play-off’ Final this time last year, since then 12 of the 16 players that day have moved on, with at least 1 more soon to follow. Due to several problems and alledged mis-management at boardroom level our club has had it’s heart ripped out from within, the future is anything but certain, but hopefully we will hear some good news soon.
