Only a Man

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 As that hand reached
out instinctively;
a brand of honest cheating,
did he really know

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 what he had done?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Premeditated. Unintentional.
We will never know which,
does he even really know?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Hard to say.
Just as it would be hard
if not impossible
to turn to the ref and point
out what he had missed,
to say
no goal, I used my hand

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 and risk it all.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Perhaps
because of what we’ve seen him do
it is easy to forget
that he is
only a man.

Notes

Obviously, I sympathize with Ireland who did not to go out in those circumstances but ti’s hardly hand of God really is it? Undoubtedly handball, yes but not the same calibre of cheating as Marradona. Of course Henry didn’t tell the referee not to allow the goal – that would have been a moronic thing to do. To me, it looked instinctive, Thierry Henry is not a dishonest player anyway. Surely it’s the Governing Bodies’ pure refusal to allow any technology to avoid situations like this that is to blame?
