Our New Manager looks like a Coach Driver

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 ‘Our new manager
looks like a bus driver.’

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 No uniform image arrives.
Bus drivers are so diverse though, Sid.
There are differences in nature,
temperament and manner
from London to Riga,
Kingston to Kingston,
Manchester to Minsk.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 One even took us to Cambridge once
when we were crying out for Colchester.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 It was a Tuesday night game
and we kept tapping him on the shoulder.
He reached his destination
while we missed the game.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 What do you mean though, Sid?
Most drivers will get you there.
It’s a rare one who fails,
who takes you to Cambridge
despite your yearnings.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 ‘Picture Steve Clarke’, he said.
(I’m with you. I can see him.
He’s your new manager. Steve Clarke.
Did well at West Brom.
Yin to Mourinho’s Yang.)

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 ‘Picture Steve Clarke’, he repeated,
‘but with a bigger belly, earring,
tattoo, short-sleeved shirt,
gold chain- rattling change.’

Notes

Had a conversation with a Reading fan about their new manager. His observation was that he looks like a bus driver, which I thought was a slightly unfortunate observation, a) because it was a judgment on appearance and b) because why would that be a negative thing?

The conversation put me in mind of Fulham’s 96/97 promotion season when a coach load of fans were taken to Cambridge rather than Colchester, despite protestations, and missed the game
