Out of respect

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Well, that’s fine then
A polite request
Respectfully met;

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 So if the Grecians
Should find the net
In their FA Cup meeting

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Then their celebrations
(More likely fleeting)
Will not reflect

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Their sponsor’s trade.
All the same –
To have played

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Against the famous ManU
And perhaps score
Or even, win the game?

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Rituals, of whatever themes
Easily set aside – for money cannot buy
Such dreams

Notes

inspired by the following news item (by Daniel Taylor, from today’s Guardian Unlimited) :

Manchester United’s fans have succeeded in blocking Exeter from celebrating goals with aeroplane impressions when they meet at Old Trafford on January 8.

The non-league club have adopted the celebration all season but United’s followers complained that it would be disrespectful because of the Munich air disaster, in which 21 people, including seven players, died in 1958.

United fans protested after learning that Exeter’s sponsor, a budget airline, offers a £1,000 reward to any member of the team who scores in Conference matches and impersonates an aeroplane.

The club’s sponsors still plan to reward any Exeter scorer with £1,000, but the players will be under orders not to celebrate as normal.

It almost seems like the Man Utd fans expect Exeter to score?
