Please Don’t Stick Me In Goal

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 you can leave me alone on the subs bench
I don’t care i’ll just do what I’m told
If it’s what I deserve
I’ll just play in reserves
but please don’t stick me in goal

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 it’s a job for a fearless performer
and you’re putting your life in your hands
all that diving to ground
with those boots flying round
being laughed at and booed by the fans

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 you can say it’s a platform for heroes
but we’re not all a Cech or a James
’cause for eighty nine minutes
you can keep your team in it
and right at the death lose the game

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 you need nerves like a lion to be out there
as the forwards come thundering down
do you stick to your line
or go racing like time
it could save you or send your team down

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 you can put on those gloves when you’re training
you can practise with heart and with soul
but if one day your goalie
ends up rolly-polly
I just beg you don’t stick me in goal

Notes

I did play in goal for a while. It was terrifying. I just used to pray our team could keep the ball up the other end . But mind you I was only 8 and my mates were all ten and eleven. “Stick the little’un in goal.”
That moment when those burly forwards came charging towards you , especially in the playground on concrete, when the goal behind you suddenly used to look huge and you wished the ground could swallow you up. Nightmare job!”
