Please Let Me Stay Up, Dad

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Saturday nights at ten o’clock, or later; A
Special treat, to stop up late enough to watch
Your team on ‘Match of the Day’ – and so
Much better if they’d won the game. You
Couldn’t miss the occasional chance – no VCRs,
No multiple cameras, no screen stats, no hi-tech
Wizardry to enliven a boring 0 – 0 draw. It was
As Coleman, Wolstenholme or Davies saw it.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 But how sweet when your lads destroyed
The starry opposition in an early season match
To go top of the league…not for long, so savour
The memory. Short shorts, long hair on colour TV;
A real novelty – the muddy dowdiness of seventies
Footy in all its’ grim reality. A quick burst of that
Famous theme tune – remember the old signature ?
Then it’s off to bed, to dream of goals and saves.
