Plumbing the Depths

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 When drowning men conspire to clutch
At straws to save their team,
Their evil machinations touch
On hell in the extreme.
What troubled mind promoted such
A bitter, twisted scheme?
This nightmare that was way too much
For any Kafka dream.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Was this dark plot designed to taunt
The Frenchmen at home base?
Nothing could have steadied Nantes
Or steeled them in this case.
The French supporters, pale and gaunt,
Ran out of Cork at pace,
Forever sadly to be haunt-
Ed by Pat Dolan’s face.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 What gross and foul perverted scene
Did meet their Gallic eyes?
Every fan, it seemed, had been
Pat Dolan in disguise.
The image, ghastly and obscene,
Is hard to visualise,
As children, chilled unto their spleen,
Did utter plaintive cries.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Football is a funny game
(Just look at Philip Neville)
Teams should be regaled the same,
The playing pitch quite level.
No need to sink down to the shame
In which the Cork fans revel,
Kindling the blackest flame
To summon up the Devil.

Notes

Cork fans tried to spook Nantes out of it by handing out free masks of Cork manager Pat Dolan at the game on Saturday.
