Poetry On The Underground!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Rather than eyeball a tabloid in the opposite seat
Or some bird in a Newcastle scarf
I’m reading dull boring poetry, set in typography neat
Inside an underground London tube car.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I can’t say I know all the poet’s
And their poems don’t do it for me
Why not a subject, a lot more of us know if
It’ll encourage more people, who travel, to read?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Maybe a poem on the Arsenal’s new stadium
A haiku about White Hart Lane
Or a quaint bit of prose to do with all those
Who go to home games on the train?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 A few lines about Queens Park Rangers
A cinquain to do with the Bee’s?
The O’s who perform out at Leyton
Or the Lions in London’s south east?

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The Hammers who play at the Boleyn
The Cottage where Fulham turn out
Or their West London neighbours
Dressed in blue that I favour
But that’s not what this poems about.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 A few verses on Crystal Palace
The odd Charlton sonnet or two
Maybe a rhyme that tells of the time
Ian Dowie was in charge of them both, then got sued.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 I don’t need Ted Hughes, en route to see blues
Or that other bloke, what’s his name Motion?
Giving me their far out in space, cryptic views
Of boats that don’t float on my ocean.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 If footballs the game of the people
A language that all nations speak
Why don’t we, at least, have a vehicle
Where we can read of a sport so unique?

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Poems about our game on the underground?
Sounds like a really good idea to me
Nothing too obscure or o.t.t profound,
Just like going to the football should be?

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 If they must have these “Poem’s On The Underground”
Pray, make them of interest, for people to read
I’m sure, then, the response from just the football club crowd
Alone, will ensure, that they’re avidly recited each week!

Notes

On the walls of the tube trains, here in London, we have a series of poster’s with poems on them entitled: “Poetry On The Underground”. some of the poems are so vague and off the wall, I sometimes wonder who, the panel, are that get the final say on what gets picked, printed and eventually stuck up for the captive audience to peruse at their leisure?

I just thought it might be an idea to to put some poems up that a lot of real people would understand and therefore avidly read, about the football for instance?

Young kids would, I’m sure, go for it, and anyway when I’m on me way to the match on the tube, (doing me bit for the enviroment, by leaving the jam jar at home) I need something to read other than those free newspapers that have nothing of interest whatsoever in them.

Some of the short poem on this site would look well cool to read between stations on the way to the ground! And be a great appetizer prior to the main course of the game itself!

peace.

Very sad to hear about the demise of the great Hugh Johns. Another terrific commentator.
