Political Football

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Kick me
and I’ll make you a millionaire.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Millions of kids –
From China to Ghana,
Council houses
In Glasgow and Gloucester –
Watch you
Kicking and heading me on screen
And want
Your shirt, boots, hair and instant fame.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Grown men will weep
When I’m shot wide of goal;
When opponents
Take me and dispatch me
So that
It’s their fans who laugh the longest,
Drinking
The nectar of a victory
Which obviates
For a time, thinking of
Credit card debts,
Unemployment and want.
Kick me,
Metaphorically speaking,
From one
Side of The House to the other.
I am the cause
Of the discontent which
The other lot,
When they were “champions”,
Forgot:
Scoring own goals, giving others
This chance
To use spin (I’m mixing sporting
Metaphors), to
Tell you want they want you
To want to hear,
Now you’re the winners.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Poor balls,
Though you will sometimes sympathise
With us,
You will always be booted off-side:
Lying punctured,
Ignored by this year’s stars,
As they kick me
At invisible goals.
