Pompey Crimes

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 ‘Play Up Pompey’ chimes
sticking in throats of
bemused fans of
the South coast club.
Hartless, Portsmouth limp on,
lurching from one crisis
to the next.
Overseen, now by
eagle-eyed Grant,
for whom this must be
a far cry from the pomp
and ceremony at the Bridge.
For Pompey it may be
a bridge too far:
paying massive transfer fees
and extortionate wages to players
based on gate receipts from
the smallest ground in the
Premiership.
A fire sale of players predicted
in the January window –
survival Portsmouth’s only hope
as the tax man tightens his grip
and the winding up order is served.

Notes

Football’s recent history is littered with clubs trying to overreach themselves and Pompey are no different from many others with one important exception – the sums involved with salaries etc are so much bigger than at lower league clubs. Fingers crossed that they survive, but I would imagine their fans are watching & listening as events unfold with growing trepidation. More to come on Stockport County’s worsening plight soon.
