Premier League 0 Northern League 1

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 No inflated ticket prices
No moving games for Sky
No club emails about third kit sales
exhorting you to buy

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 No maximising revenue streams
No bond scheme for your seat
No building the brand in a faraway land
in order to ‘compete’

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 No flannel about projects
No joyless corporate speak
No talk of fatigue in the Northern League
should you play three times a week

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 No more ‘best league in the world’
No finishing eighth as a goal
No pangs of remorse when I filed for divorce
I want football, my love, with some soul

Notes

I penned this on a beer mat in a pub after watching a Northern League game between Newcastle Benfield and Whitley Bay. It struck me that I’d hardly given Newcastle United’s game at Chelsea that same afternoon a moment’s thought. As I increasingly tire of the Premier League, I’m becoming less a part-time football supporter of my own team NUFC to more a supporter of part-time football, the Northern League lads.
