Pretending We’re Not At The Top

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 flying high upon the hill
where sheep will graze and time stands still
we pinch ourselves and have to stop
pretending we’re not at the top

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 the silence broken with a roar
the joy from fans each time we score
we hold our breath no words to say
we cannot be carried away
the tables we’ve learned to ignore
we’ve been here once or twice before

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 this long-held dream that hangs like thread
against the best the land has bred
these names that echo history
who find themselves here in this league
and pray a quick return be made
it doesn’t always work that way..
and far beyond the wins the tears
that lasted for seventeen years
this level that’s become our home
for so long now the place we’ve known

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 the hope the push the tiny chance
to dare to think we might advance
and would we last a little higher
like tiny logs into the fire?
but still we long and still we dream
from South Stand to some tiny stream
in pubs or in some warm café
in Nailsworth Stroud and far away

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 but flying high upon the hill
where sheep will graze and time stands still
we pinch ourselves and have to stop
pretending we’re not at the top

Forest Green Rovers 3-Guiseley 0 Att:1749 Sat Oct 10 2015

“It’s a long hard road ..yeah before we’ll be free ” Richie Havens RIP

But…three goals, another clean sheet and three points helped Forest Green Rovers extend their stay at the top of the National League table to five points over closest rivals Cheltenham Town, in this oh so competitive fifth tier .

Lets’ put it into perspective. In terms of effort required and trying to rise from of this level ,we have survived in this league for 17 years, longer than anyone else, and sometimes literally by the skin of our teeth. (Do teeth have skin?)

Even worse – among the 23 other sides ,we now have 14 former higher league teams alongside us in this division. Cheltenham Town, Wrexham*, Grimsby Town*, Tranmere Rovers*, Lincoln City, Torquay Utd, Macclesfield, Altrincham, Southport, Halifax Town , Chester , Barrow , Aldershot Town and Gateshead. All great sides with great stories and followings and none of them used to all-vegan organic fare for starters! Maybe it’s working on an eco level?

Unlike the 4 professional Football League sections, where 3 up, 3 down applies, we only have 2 up and down ie;.One guaranteed top place available, with the second promotion places determined by 3 play off matches with the final at Wembley!.

Over the past few years and seasons we’ve played and watched AFC Wimbledon, Oxford Utd, Luton Town, Bristol Rovers, Newport ,Fleetwood, Crawley and many more escape these clutches.

.Is it our turn now ..please?

PS * Thinking about it ..I watched Chelsea play Wrexham and Grimsby in the League and even Tranmere away in the Cup back in the 60s!
