We all know that surge of feeling
When Ipswich equalised against us
A fan punched right through his ceiling

He could see the funny side, a hole through plaster board
Then the player offered to pay to fix it
After all, he was guilty of having scored…

Now it needs re-tiling, Mr Johnson, that’s the truth
When you were red carded, and so received suspension
I tell you I was livid, now I need a new extension

Then you missed a sitter, can you help repair my gutter
When you scored that screamer, I overdid the celebration
Now I must inform you of the cost of decoration

It was curtains for the window, in my joy, I smashed the glass

My carpet might disintegrate, send me crashing through the floor

Notes

An Ipswich fan, watching the game at home on TV, celebrated the equaliser against Norwich with a fist pump and punched a hole in his ceiling. He tweeted a photo of the damage to share the moment with others who he thought would find it funny and Paul Anderson, the goal scorer, tweeted to say he would pay to have the ceiling fixed. Good bloke, nice gesture.

My poem is just a bit of fun before The Big Match, second leg semi-final play-off Norwich City v Ipswich Town this coming Saturday.

There can only be one winner. I hope it’s football.
