R.E.S.P.E.C.T. To Another Fine West London Team!

Where the punters back on to The Thames
Watching derbies that almost saw ructions
Causing rifts amongst families and friends.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Fulham real old skool with ace Johnny Haynes
Us young Blues bravado and flash
Rammed “Bridge” or “Cottage”, closely fought games
That caused ire in “The Cage” round our flats.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Two fine teams in one borough of London
Where the Kings Road runs down by The Thames
On fraught match days one has the conundrum:
Dear God, don’t let us lose in the derby to “Them!”

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Simply blanking those kids on our manor
Who happened to wear a white shirt?
When you won, you adopted that manner
Kids have, of slyly rubbing ones face in the dirt.

That all us real football fans share
Some days you bask in a shower of victory
Others? Drenched by monsoons of despair.

As those in “The Know” will confirm
So the plaudits to Fulham (and mucho respecto to “em”)
Are throughly deserved coz plaudits like those were hard earned!

Notes

Many congratulations go out to our next-door neighbours, Fulham and their pretty astute manager Roy Hodgson for a truly magnificent journey through out Europe this season, and on their reaching the final of The Europa Cup competition. Mucho respecto is due.

Here’s an explanation of London speak in the poem for those of you somewhat confused by my use of terminology!

When our bomb blasted post-war streets were pulled down and the local council moved us in to plush flats on a new housing estate near The River Thames, they built us a huge wire cage (hence the name) to play football in so we wouldn’t keep on smashing people’s windows with our missed placed shots aimed in anger at the goal.

“In The Know” was a term for someone sharp or knowledge-able that was in popular use when I was a kid growing up in West London.
