Rafacabana

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 His name is Rafa,
And he’s our Gaffer,
He was sent from sunny Spain
To make the Reds mighty again.
He came to Anfield,
And not to Villa,
Says he can’t stand Manilow,
Prefers our Cilla.
He waves his magic wand,
See how his players respond,
He’s got the Lads all fired up,
But the road’s still long…

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Rafa Benitez,
He’s an elitist.
Only the best will do for him,
That’s why he keeps himself in trim.
He doesn’t drink or smoke,
Pop pills, shoot smack, snort coke.
He ain’t no Scouser, what a shame,
But he’s a real nice bloke.
Ra-Ra-Ra-Rafa,
Our Ga-Ga-Gaffer!

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Long live Our Rafa,
‘Cos he ain’t gaga.
No, he’s canny and he’s shrewd,
He’s one hell of a cool dude –
In his suit and Burberry Mac
He looks most dapper.
We love Our Rafa,
He makes us laugh, ha!
Oh yes, he’s always cracking jokes,
A lot more fun than Bertie Vogts…
Ra-Ra-Ra-Rafa,
Such a la-laugh, ha!

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Senor Benitez,
He’s no defeatist.
‘Cos he knows it’s Victoree
That tastes the sweetest.
He wants a trophy,
For he’s no dope, he.
Aware we fans expect results,
Or he’ll get covered in insults,
And we’ll cry: “Get you back to Spain,
And don’t dare show your face again,
Ra-Ra-Ra-Rafa,
You Spanish Gaffer…”

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Ra-Ra-Ra-Rafa,
Our Ga-Ga-Gaffer.
At Li-Li-Li-Ver-Pool,
Li-Li-Li-Li-Ver-Pool.
A Great Club, not to be confused with Blackpool!
Li-Li-Li-Li-Ver-Pool! Li-Li-Li-Li-Ver-Pool!
Only an utter fool would mix us up with Blackpool…

Notes

Last year Jonny Hurst won the Barclaycard Chant Laureate competition with a re-working of Barry Manilow’s Copacabana in honour of Aston Villa’s Juan Pablo Angel. Now I pay homage to these earlier masterpieces with this effort in honour of Rafael Benitez, officially dated 22/1/05, but actually written a couple of weeks ago, before Liverpool’s defeat at home to Man U and before they were knocked out of The Cup by Burnley…
