Reclaim the game

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The turnstiles still click
Though they’re rusting and sick,
Like the back streets in which you will find them,
And men in cloth caps
Come in looking for scraps
That the rich have left scattered behind them.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The stand looks so bare
With the paltry few there,
Where once it was packed like New Delhi.
And each space represents
The Sky-driven pretence
That real football is shown on the telly.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Thus teams that are local
Grow less and less vocal
As young fans are lured by the spiel,
And the marketing ploys
Drag impressionable boys
To a world that’s completely unreal.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Can the masses reclaim
The once-beautiful game
Through rebellious, concerted endeavour?
Or is vict’ry complete
O’er the man in the street,
Making football big business forever?
