Reflections (Or What Football Means To Me)!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 T’would have been about nineteen sixty
When this bug first got a hold
I remember that me mates and me
Played great matches down our road.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Then the council knocked our street down
That meandered down to the Thames
They built a concrete jungle on our football ground
When our houses were condemned.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 We moved on to a new estate
Where our “flats” were all the rage
Only now we played our beautiful games
Enclosed, inside a wire cage.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 We were anyone we wanted to be
We were Springett, Yashin, Banks
We were Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Greaves
We were Cockneys, Scousers, Mancs.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 It’s the oranges in the half time interval
It’s one goal is all we need
It’s yer manager telling yer to try and keep it simple
That’s what football means to me.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 At secondary school I played the fool
Whilst at geography? A disaster.
I wasn’t interested if you want the truth
“He’s a dead loss”, said our master.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Who cares for Lake Superior,
Winnipeg or Lake Ontario
I wanted to know about where CSKA Sofia
Played, Dulka Prague or Torpedo Moscow.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Try talking to me of the famous Honved club
The Mighty Magyars on show at Wemberly
That’s the kind of geographical stuff
That’ll grab my attention in yer lessons.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Some cool teachers taught me a discipline
How to enjoy our game and play by the rules
Why even Albert Camus himself has said
“I learnt much about life from the game of football “.

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 It’s the oranges in the half time interval
It’s one goal is all we need
It’s yer manager telling yer to try and keep it simple
That’s what football means to me.

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 To be continued……..

Notes

I think this a blinding idea for a topic and one I intend going back to at a later date. I’ve been scribbling notes down at lunch and at the odd moment, so this is all I have in rhyme at the moment.
