Roger McGough! Were The Scaffold His Club?

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 So “there’s no good poems been written on football”
Is that quite so Roger me son?
P’haps you need to get out a bit more to listen to real fans written words
You won’t be able to do that from outside Goodison!

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 You say you don’t expect to hear real fans sing/say your poem
Cos it don’t take the form of a song
P’haps they won’t read it, sing or believe in it
Cos maybe, just maybe you’ve only come out of the woodwork
To get a plug for yer psuedo football fan stuff

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Because next month the World Cup is on!

Notes

Just caught sight of an interview in Fridays” Telegraph” with Roger McGough who’s plugging a new World Cup poem that he’s just penned.

That’s pretty cool, a nice bit of timing and publicity for the upcoming tournament and his poem thats hopefully gonna captivate and offer inspiration to all us die hards who’ll be watching the greatest football competition in the in the World 24/7.

But the “There are some good poems about cricket, fishing and riding but not about football because, I suppose, its regarded as a working mans sport” Is the bit that really gets me goat.

Yeah right Roger and if the World Cup did’nt happen to be just around the corner and happening next month would you be bothering yourself writing about a working mans sport at all? Needletip!

I think that maybe we should all have a go at producing a half decent poem/poems on the World Cup here as there are enough pretty cool writers who are actually real fans of the game.

Rant over.

peace

kev.
