Saturday Nght Football On Brighton Beach

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 A news piece on the radio this morning piqued my interest
As it told of how when England play football
cases of domestic violence increase
So in this town, the party capital of the south,
they’ve erected a big screen down on the beach.
This leaves me feeling terrified over Saturday night
when we will inevitably lose to the Italians in the World Cup.
And the game ain’t due to end until gone midnight
when it’s like a warzone on the best of nights

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 No chances of a quiet night then as idiots
with faces painted red and white
drink too much lager and lose all control.
As yet again we will bow out to superior opponents
but what comes after that is even more worrisome.
What happens if we lose to Uruguay
and then struggle against the mighty Costa Rica?
Will they destroy the big screen
and run riot through our town.
as lager and hope conspire against them
leaving us wishing that football had never been invented?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 But for me football is a joy,
despite supporting a terrible team
who rejoice in being hated
Surely the big screen is a bad idea
as I can see the scene right now
Young lads going to supermarkets
to buy cheap beer
that they will then take down to the beach
They’ll drink it down unaware of what it’s going to do
until that moment when the Italians score
Tempers will fray and destruction will follow
and all I know is it’s going to be
another Saturday night of little sleep and a whole lot of worry

Notes

Editor Note: What happened Bradford did it kick off …in the wild sense a la your poem ?..We were doing a football poetry and music gig here at 8pm before it started, not a great idea in reflection(!) when it kicked off big time in Stroud!
