Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer Buy ~ Revisited

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Shall I compare thee to a summer buy ?
Thou art more gifted and more rare.
Tough games do come so fast and seasons fly,
And summer’s break so short doth seem each year.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Sometimes so bright that long sought trophy shines,
And often is our domination pressed ;
And every player’s peak at times declines,
By football’s ever growing games and test ;

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 But though thy season never seems to end
Nor lessens pace at any time I fear ;
Nor shall its end make others warn of yours,
When with each game thou doest improve so here.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 So long as fans can cheer and pay to see
So long this game lives on and giveth joy to you and me.

Notes

Inspired by Jeremy’s great sonnet for The Canaries, I’ve republished this here, 10 years on from it’s first appearance to coincide with the 390th .This was written for the forthcoming season back then….. but whatever.

Using Will’s sonnet 12 line format: every other line rhyming and the last two rhyming, I have also kept the first word of each line true to the original . It’s also the only poem I can recall ,in which I’ve ever used punctuation and capital letters apart from names and the odd dash ..I think? .That’s e e cummings fault (‘the patron saint of lower case’) and early Liverpool Poets of the sixties . More Swapping Shirts with Shakespeare poems please ….that’s how we started eg: the banner at the top of our home page…….
