Shall I Deny This Football

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Shall I deny this football
that only wants a kick,
a simple pass
along the grass,
a one-two, or a flick?

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Shall I deny this football
that saw me through my youth,
while other boys
coveted toys
beyond my reach, in truth?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Shall I deny this football
that never me denied,
and taught that spoils
meet he who toils,
so I, the harder, tried?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Shall I deny this football
now that I’ve grown much older,
and lack the speed
I’ll surely need,
the pace of it to shoulder?

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Shall I deny this football?
True, I have lost some form.
Still, memory
has not left me.
My blood, it still runs warm.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Shall I deny this football
for just appearance’ sake,
now I’m no threat
but near our net
and must a clearance make?

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 “Shall I deny this football,”
to the teenage me sounds funny,
but young men’s lives
find kids and wives
and sport gives way to money.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Shall I deny this football?
Shall I renounce the Game,
or, hand in hand,
walk home as planned,
together, as we came?

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 I shan’t deny this football
I’ll play until I’m done;
’til Ref’s last breath
signals a death
from ninety minutes run.
