SILKY

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 At school,
in the hotbed of the playground,
I’d always volunteer to play
left-wing
‘cos that’s where he played-
Laurie Cunningham,
best player I’d ever seen
in all my nine years…..

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Years later,
I was back in a school-
this time on the other side of the desk,
teaching conversational English
to giggling teenage girls and business execs.
Sometimes, though, the conversation would turn to football.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I’ll always remember that day-
best lesson I ever taught.
Albion fan and Real Madrid fan,
remembering the good old days;
(he didn’t have to remember quite as far back as me!)

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Remember Laurie Cunningham?
he asked.
My heart skipped a tackle at the mere mention
of his name after all those years.
Robbed from the Baggies
for around a million, I sighed.
Ten minutes we kicked around vocabulary
that would best describe him…

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 We settled on
silky.
