Some-One Could Have Told Me!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 As we hadn’t a phone,
Round at our house
I decided to go anyway
So I went through
The motions and things that one does
Every Saturday morning we’d play.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Butterflies,
A sigh at the weather
Baggy shorts and a shirt that don’t fit
Plus a warm pair of gloves
Are an absolute must
As are shinpads, to avoid getting kicked.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 A dodgy old cap a la Yashin,
And a black roll necked sweater like his
Weren’t what you’d call chic football fashion
But who gives two figs when you’re kids?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 A black pair of socks
Complemented this lot
With two bright green rings near the knee
Thank God for the cubs
Coz me poor cash strapped mum
Had nisht gelt with, to further indulge me.*

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The piece de resistance
For goal kicking distance
Was a wonderful pair of black boots
Cost? Thirty nine and eleven
That the young suave me reckoned
Set off me goalkeepers suit.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 I’d pack all the above in a duffel bag
With care as per family jewels
Then march up the road with the other fine lads
Like a pride of young lions to the tube.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 As I’ve said we’d no phone
So I set off, this one day from home
To the church where me team mates would meet
Just imagine the shock
This out of touch goalkeeper got
When no one showed up to play….only me.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 No butterflies,
No sense of occasion
For shiny boots I’d prepared for me feet
So the next Friday night I’d know
To a mates house to go
To find just WHERE next morning, us players would meet!

Notes

Out walking me dog this morning, I walked across an empty football pitch in perfect unplayed on nick, and this poem came to me.

Yes it did happen..but only the once. Coz just getting a game was the business and failure to turn up two weeks running and you were out, dropped and no messing.

*Yiddish for no money.
