on that sunlit evening, corporate sponsors
lacked the power of old resonances,
the simple terms the world could afford us:
Richmond Park, rumours of Gorseinon –
leagues below – drifting over the tannoy
as a violet cloud bank rests behind
a floodlit stage for the latest test:
another scrap with Haverfordwest.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 1 In the midst of incongruous buildings,
by the club shop trailer with its ‘Old Gold’ crest,
an arrow leads fans to a white wall
from which nowhere’s accessible.
The game has a rhythm without fluency
in possession, recycling or an ulterior purpose
beyond new iterations of old world values:
heart and confidence: commitment, full-blooded.
The sky’s shifting gold and vibrant vapours.

Notes

This recollects a visit to Richmond Park (or the ‘Stadiwm Vibrant Vapours’ as it was rebranded) for a close 1-1 draw with Haverfordwest on a very atmospheric evening at an interesting ground.
