Statues

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 In finals of importance
I like to look at the way
The defeated players react
While jubilation encircles them.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Usually found in the same spot
When the whistle blows
Like statues frozen
By the end of play.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Sometimes they are standing
Maybe applauding their fans
Sometimes they are lying
Exhausted and regretful.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 A few from the other team
Offer a shake of the head
And a sympathetic look
In gestures sporting.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The mud on the shorts
And sweat stained shirts
Messy with nothing to show
For strenous efforts.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 And some people say
We learn more from failing
Though on that night
It’s no consolation.
