Strangers in Football Places

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Seeing the same faces in the crowd
old faces never look any older
then you realise you haven’t seen them for a while
empty seats remind you
till another is in possession
it’s a passing game after all

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 fidgety kids return as men
till their nerves give out again
swap season ticket for a mortgage
raise the kids to support your beloved team
it’s hereditary
it’s in your genes

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 sitting where your grandparents stood
they cheered on City, they knew you would
some faces nod, some never speak
but they know if you miss a week
it’s the Sword of Damacles
supporting a team runs in families

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 as soon as you’re born you’re duty bound
to follow the club your forebears found
each person born here has a place
a century of belonging at its base

Notes

There are no strangers in a football crowd.

Inspired by Football in Strange Places, the 2008 calendar of Wensum Albion FC which has raised over £300 for the Bobby Moore Cancer Research Fund. Look out for the 2009 version – you never know, they could be going global!
