Swatty Motty

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 We’d expect nothing less
From the doggerel deliverer in sheepskin coat
A germaine fact for every situation
And as for match day ‘must have’ – he gets my vote

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Don’t know how he managed it
But he even worked in a mention of the Titanic
Without spoiling or impinging
On a cup final desperately tight and manic

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 But what impressed me the most
Was how he turned from statto to soothsayer
“Utd have had most of the possession, but will it win the day?”
Just when it looked as if, Arsenal hadn’t a prayer

Notes

Reference to the 2005 FA Cup Final,
which Arsenal won on penalties.

Jens Lehmann’s save from Paul Scholes penno was the crucial play –
just to help the Glaser’s understand how they lost!

A meeting of two titans, Arsenal and Man Utd,
commentated on by the best in the business – John Motson.
I had the pleasure of playing aginst Mr Motson, many moons ago,
when he played for the Commentators XI.
(I’m sure he has the date and time logged somewhere!)
He played like he commentated – thoughtful and precise.
And the mic man who fancied himself the most? Tony Gubba.

Apparently, John Motson’s colour co-ordinated notes from the Cup Final
are / were to be raffled off for charity.
