Sweet FA Cup

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The romance, the glamour
The media clamour
It’s our season to win the FA Cup
Fiftieth anniversary of our ’59ers
Third Division South, they played some blinders
For half a century, acclaim has built
They may have been rank outsiders
But, inspired, we’ve had their light to guide us
Still talk about ‘that’ Cup run, current day
We’ve stuck by Norwich City, gaunt and thin
We rave about a Cup side that didn’t win
But they went far

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 It gives fans something to talk about
Since then we’ve still won almost nowt
But they almost did

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 So we’ll have a special edition kit
To remember our Cup run heroes wearing it
Put on a bit of a do
To win the Cup this year would be fine tribute
To repel all-comers like King Canute
Not drowning, but dreaming
2009 the year of celebration
Let’s hope it’s not marked by relegation
Who will write the script?

Notes

Luton Town beat Norwich City 1-0 in the FA Cup semi final replay in 1959. On the journey home, in the “Top Brass Special” train, the City players moved from compartment to compartment chanting “You sang for us, we’ll sing for you!” and gave many renditions of “On the Ball City” to their faithful fans. All this excitement, and all before I was even born. Will we ever get that close again?
