Swimming with Sharks

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 And so your club has sold its soul
Chasing far off glory
But now the piper calls the tune
It’s such a different story
Foreign money was the bait
Men with business charms
Offered you a quick leg up
You took with open arms

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Those promises just looked so good
To lift you from your rut
But now the reckoning day has come
The trap they set snapped shut
They’ve come to take their pound of flesh
The money from your hand
So that they can service debt
No thought for where you stand

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 They don’t care if you don’t pay
Or march outside and picket
TV funds will fill the gap
Left by your season ticket
You worry about tourist fans
Those two team scarves aren’t funny
But the owners do not care
They’ll gladly take their money

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 But where I go is not the same
My club needs my cash
Because I am a non league fan
I don’t want somewhere flash
If we don’t pay our club shuts down
As all around us know
So everyone from Chairman down
Is truly glad we go

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 You say you’re priced out of the game
That future fans are lost
To watch my team kids pay six pounds
That’s hardly any cost
Don’t tar the game with one broad brush
There’s great times to be had
Forget the pampered Premier boys
Non leagues not that bad

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Your voice is heard on pitch and off
You stand and watch the game
Mix with fans of other teams
Not segregated shame
Your money goes straight to the club
Spent on the ground and team
Time to support your hometown boys
And help them live the dream
