That Rare Thing.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I too had read the articles
In those glossy football magazines.
About the famous push over, at Hillsborough
Seen those pictures in Corriere Dello Sport
On the West End news-stands.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 My forever lasting memory
Of him though, is of another incident,
The day up at Goodison Park.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Where the Everton keeper, Paul Gerrard
Had in punching a clearance,
Fallen badly and lay writhing in agony
With a twisted ankle, unable to get to his feet.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Said clearance was crossed back
In to the Everton eighteen yard box.
Where with an injured keeper on the floor
And a un-guarded goal at his mercy.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 He seemingly without a second thought
For the consequences
Caught the ball in his hand and placed it on the ground.
Whereby a free kick was awarded to Everton
So their keeper could receive medical attention.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 In his area along the touchline,
Harry Redknapp must have been tearing
What little hair he had left, out in clumps.
At such an act, though deep down inside
I suspect he had nothing but admiration
For the little Roman’s action…as we all did.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Back on the team bus, to East London that night
When the little Roman relived his day
Would he ever forget the marvellous feeling
He got from the thunderous applause the Goodison faithful
Had bestowed on him, for that act of true sportsmanship?

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 On the odd occasion, as per the above
Real football legends don’t just score great goals
That win games…. or do they?

Notes

I don’t know what happened to this blokes cranium in the latter part of his career in Italy. This is what I recall with great fondness. Oh and one more incident, which was a great goal he scored…. against us over at The Bridge! But more of that later.

peace.

kev.
