The 1980 Scottish Cup Final

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 It was a sunny day on the 10th of May,
Our youthful voices, were hoarse and cracked.
For it was back in the year of 1980,
That we sang through the streets up to Hampden Park.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Onto Hampden’s turf our heroes ran out,
The Scottish Cup was there for the glory.
We were feeling fine, with our bottles of wine,
Blessed by the Benedictine monks of Buckfast Abbey.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 On the terracing we stood, chanting Celtic’s name,
While the Rangers supporters whistled and screamed.
On the pitch, both teams, fought for a goal
That was eventually scored by the bhoys in green.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 A full ninety minutes, had came and went
As players and supporters, readied for extra time.
Our throats were dry and we needed a cure
For we had finished the last of our tonic wine.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The sun stood high in the Glasgow sky,
Our songs of faith never withered or faltered.
As referee Smith get set for extra time,
Novenas were said to Brother Walfrid.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Back and forth, the game would flow,
Both teams eager to avoid a replay.
Then McGrain took a shot, that McCloy could not stop
As it deflected of the boot of McCluskey.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 It was a celebration of joy from the Kings Park end
As supporters spilled onto the pitch.
They embraced the players of the green and white
Who had brought victory home for the Glasgow Celtic.
