The Ballboy

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 On my birthday
I felt a tingle of pure joy
I was told my wish was granted
I was to be a match ball boy
The crowd all clapped and cheered
As I ran on to the pitch
I was worn out when I got halfway
But that’s because I’m sixty six

Notes

I’ve been lucky enough to walk out from the players tunnel onto the pitch at Carrow Road. A marvellous sight greeted me – lots of fat pigeons scoffing grass seed. It was close season and the turf had been ‘scarified’ (dug up really). It scarified me, I worried in case it didn’t grow back. One other time was at a corporate 5 a side and I noticed that the groundstaff were very protective of their goalmouth areas. They spend their working week tending blades of grass, knowing each by name, only to see it clumped to shreds on a Saturday.
