The Beatles, Mods, Rockers & Football.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Large towering floodlights illuminating the sky
One end of our ground open to the elements
The smell of cigarettes and cigars in the air
Us small children all down at the front.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 This is our ground in the swinging sixties
All packed in tight like sardines in a large tin
Us kids wrapped up in woolly hats and scarves
Making lots of noise with our big rattles.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I recall the excitement of walking to the ground
Listening to the adults talk about the opposition
The atmosphere all around the terraces and stands
This was like being in heaven to a small kid.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Seeing all these players from my soccer magazines
Dreaming about being just like them one day
In childhood awe seeing Best, Law, Greaves close up
Greavsie winking at us as he stood by the post.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Yes the sixties was a great era, no doubt about it
But nothing stays the same forever, things change
Football is great today, kids love it just the same
But to me this was the best time to be a football fan.

Notes

This could be from Monty Python, when I was a lad, but reading Kevin Raymonds poem, the time Chelsea lost at Shrewsbury, made me think back to this era, but I guess all fans have a special era, and this is definetely mine.

Thanks for this..echoed and ditto Crispin
But I never knew Danny Blanchflower was boss at Chelsea !
