The Book of Revelations

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I saw the turnstiles closing,
As the people cried,
The soul of football dozing,
Angels at his side.
I saw Dave Beckham posing
In a pink sarong.
I saw the future of football,
Lord, I hope I’m wrong.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I heard the trumpets blaring
On the silver screen,
There was no raucous swearing,
And the pitch looked green,
I should have been more sparing,
But I’m not that strong.
I saw the future of football,
Lord, I hope I’m wrong.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I saw the moneyed classes
Dressed in pinstripe suits,
Climbing o’er the masses
In their hob-nailed boots.
They were issuing passes,
But I don’t belong.
I saw the future of football,
Lord, I hope I’m wrong.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Jackie Carey was weeping
In the entrance hall,
Liam Whelan sleeping
With an old football.
I saw the agents creeping
Through the swaying throng.
I saw the future of football,
Lord, I hope I’m wrong.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 I saw directors dancing
To the ad men’s tune.
The sound was quite entrancing
In the afternoon.
But a boil needed lancing,
And they stopped the song.
I saw the future of football,
Lord, I hope I’m wrong.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 I saw the corporate giants
Rub their hands with glee
As they sought compliance
From the powers-that-be,
Invited their clients
To come and strike the gong.
I saw the future of football,
Lord, I hope I’m wrong.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 On high, the Lord changed channels
From his digital throne,
Directing football panels
On his telephone.
I tried to read the annals,
But it took too long.
I saw the future of football,
Lord, I hope I’m wrong.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 I saw the pillars falling
With a mighty crash,
The teenage boy go sprawling
Beneath a mound of cash.
I heard Bill Shankly calling
To his friend King Kong.
I saw the future of football,
Lord, I hope I’m wrong.
