1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 “And what do you want to be
when you leave here young lad ?”
“Me Sir, I’m going to be a footballer
watched on the terraces by my dad.”

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 “And I want to play for Coventry City
and wear the Sky Blue,
be idolised by the supporters
and play for England too.”

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 ” I don’t want to work in a warehouse
an office or any shop,
I just long to play football
and score a goal in front of the Kop.”

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 “Don’t be so silly boy
it’s a car factory for you,
you’ll be wearing overalls
and not a kit of Sky Blue.”

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 “So you stop all of this fantasy
and prepare for the factory floor,
you’ll never be like Georgie Best
Jimmy Greaves, or Denis Law.”

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 That poor boy took it all in
and cried in his room that night,
so he’ll never be a footballer then
just a labourer on a building site ?

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 And the young lad lost confidence
the careers officer shattered his dream,
and he did end up as a labourer
and never played for his beloved team.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 So please watch what you say
when you talk to the very young,
as they may appear full of themselves
but deep down many can be highly strung.

Notes

I recall the careers officer coming to my school when I was aged about fourteen/fifteen, and he asked us all our plans when we left ?

My teacher told him that I played for the school and for Coventry Boys, and I told him that I was going to be a footballer.

He was very patronising and said it was the car factory for most of us as Coventry was a big motor industry back then.

He seemed to give me a hard time and told me to get back to reality and stop dreaming.

It must have effected me because I never went for it and settled for labouring work on building sites.

I should have ignored him but back then you looked up to these people, but it shows they never encouraged but did the opposite.
