The Day A Great Team Died
¶ 1

how cold today this world outside
how many here recall
the day the great United died
the finest team of all
at barely ten I woke to find
so many flowers gone
the snow and wreckage caught in time
how would the club go on?

and people still remember well
the feeling on that day
the pictures of that broken shell
that took our best away
the fragile nature of our life
whoever we may be
all in a second like a knife
all gone from you and me
for who could ever take or fill
the place of such great men?
their passion pride and endless skill
we’ll never see again

and though United rise and climb
those names go on today
and every year around this time
wherever people play
we think of those who might have been
their talent joy and pride
the finest side the world had seen
the day a great team died

a nation watched it all unfold
and many turned to Red
including me if truth be told
in honour of the dead
survivors plucked from in that hearth
who somehow battled through
the players journalists and staff
the names that we all knew

a nation stood to cheer and roar
the Phoenix that would grow
from ashes of that runway floor
and to that Final go
and now today with snow outside
how many here recall
the day the great United died
the finest team of all?
