The Day A Team Died

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Tragedy hit the footballing world on the 6th of February 1958,
Things were never to be the same again,
For a mere 54 seconds the world stood still,
As Munich took the lives of 23 courageous men.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The Manchester United Team were on their way back from Belgrade,
When their plane stopped in Munich to re-fuel,
Unaware of the disaster that was about to strike,
In a twist of fate which was far beyond cruel.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 After two failed attempts to re-flight the plane,
The players set off on their final ever trip.
This was the fatal third and final attempt
When their lives were pulled out of their grip

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 After the plane had been checked,
The crew was happy to try to take-off again,
But that is when disaster struck,
And Munich claimed the lives of 23 men.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Not all was right with the plane,
It over ran the runway and crashed,
The hopes and dreams of all those players,
Within 54 seconds were dashed.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The glittering Elizabethan airplane, so elegant and comfortable,
Was now little more than an aluminum tomb,
The soccer world was plunged into mourning,
Over Manchester hung a cloud of gloom.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Along with all the dead bodies of our hero’s in Munich,
Lay the broken hearts of thousands of United fans.
This team was supposed to be the greatest ever.
This crash destroyed more than just Busbys plans

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 It claimed the life of BOOM BOOM Edwards,
So young….so strong…….so brave.
The world would expect such true words ,
To be the epitaph on this mans grave.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Along with Edwards died Roger Byrne,
One of the finest captains of the time,
Mark Jones, David Pegg, Eddie Colemen.
All were stars that were set to shine.

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 Also taken were Tommy Taylor, Geoff Bent and Liam Whelan:
One of the greatest Irish prospects to come along in years,
Its not hard to imagine how the news of their deaths,
Burst the Manchester skies into floods of tears.

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 And now 48 years have gone by.
Yet the memories of these players still last,
Those heroes will never be forgotten.
They are forever engraved in our past.

12 Leave a comment on verse 12 0 We must never forget the courage of Busby,
And all his hard-working team,
Who fought back from that tragedy,
And re-built the United dream

13 Leave a comment on verse 13 0 And it is to them, we owe the biggest debt,
Without them United wouldn’t be the club they are today.
They summoned the strength to carry on,
And got together a team to go out and play.

14 Leave a comment on verse 14 0 Like the hero’s we lost in Munich, they never gave up,
Through the tough times they still kept the red flag flying high.
And today the red flag still flies high,
Cause Man Utd will never die.
