The Doog

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Rebel with a cause, articulate Ulsterman
Who eschewed bigoted division at home
To carve a sparkling career over here –
At Pompey, then Ewood; asked for a move
On Cup Final day…Shaven headed at
Villa Park – then spells with the Posh, and
At Leicester before making his home in
Wolverhampton – as Wolves’ number nine.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 A hat-trick on his home debut – gesture,
Flamboyance, flair, finesse; a towering
Presence who commanded respect.
Formed a special rapport with the fans;
‘The Doog’ they called him – TV pundit,
PFA Chairman, even sometime DJ.
Opinionated, colourful, controversial;
A man to lead, a man to follow.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Then, a partnership borne of youth and
Experience with hot-shot John Richards;
It flourished briefly, but so sweetly
As they carved open opponents in
Vintage style. A Wembley finale in ’74;
League Cup victory – winner’s medal at last.
He had left his mark in Wanderers’ Gold, and
Province Green, but remained a singular spirit.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 The prodigal made an ’80s return; stood
On the North Bank amongst his people.
Out of his depth, and embroiled in turmoil
Dougan’s tarnished crown slipped, and fell.
But nothing could lessen those glory years,
When he strode the Molineux field, and
Charmed the adoring faithful by word and deed.
A man for all seasons, he did it his way.
