The Downward Spiral..(Always Been There)

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 You blame the rest of Europe
As though we are so pure
And never leapt to such great depths
As they did long before
You blame the Latin temperament
How racist can you be
The downward spiral’s everywhere
And there for all to see
It starts of in the parks and streets
It gathers speed in school
This endless diving has one place
And that’s the swimming pool

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 While you bemoan the long gone times
When gentlemen would play
But I recall above it all
Such battles down the way
Seen crunching tackles flying in
Since nineteen fifty eight
Seen balls that didn’t cross the line
Stir violence and hate
Been chased down streets for wearing blue
Seen bricks and bottles fly
On concrete grounds in little towns
While others just stood by
Seen players in pitched battle
In nineteen sixty two
Seen lumps of concrete miss my head
And children screaming too

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 You tell me now it’s sanitized
This ancient crazy game
And stadiums all look alike
And nothing’s quite the same
You tell me that you can’t stand up
You miss the atmosphere
At least we’re free of smells of wee
Around us everywhere..

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 You blame the money and the greed
Unike the days before
As though the players of that time
all loved it being poor
You blame the leaders of the game
How dated can you be
The downward spiral’s everywhere
And there for all to see

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 It kicks off in the papers
It’s blown up on TV
This endless diving has one place
And that’s way out at sea
But somewhere still a glimmer burns
Among the skilled today
The Peles had to fight it too
It’s never gone away
The stakes have just grown higher
The yearning is the same
In child and man in boss or fan
It’s still the greatest game

Notes

Still crazy… still Joga Bonito
