The dreaded ‘R’ word

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Holy Moly
What drama it turned out to be
Last day deliberation
To work out the bottom three

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Done and dusted
The Hammers already nailed
Firmly to the foot
They sit most positively impaled

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 But for the others
Countless permutations abound
Hence the plethora
Of earphones at each ground

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Nerves a-jangling
Relegation the dreaded spectre
Two from five
Disappear from the league of nectar

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Fourteen times
In ninety minutes of fray
The trapdoor nips
But three live another day

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 For them
Scenes of joy and elation
But of the sacrificial pair
Flags and shirts for cremation

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Tears of joy
Trump those of humiliation
Bitterness comes to those
With ideas above their station

Notes

Wow!
What a last day of the season.
Utd already crowned Champions.
Man City catch Chelsea on points, Arsenal finish fourth.

But the relegation battle was something else to behold.
West Ham were already down.

But four matches involving 5 teams for the last two places – saw the bottom 3 placings change 14 times during the 90 minutes!

In the end, it was Blackpool & Birmingham who joined the Hammers.
Wolves escaped with a goal in the last 3 minutes! (although they lost, they ultimately survived on goal difference)

What a pity to see Blackpool relegated. They brought a cavalier approach – but it was also their undoing.

For the record, the final day results :

Wolves 2 – 3 Blackburn (Rovers the other team in danger at the start of proceedings)
Man Utd 4 – 2 Blackpool
Spurs 2 – 1 Birmingham
Stoke 1 – 2 Wigan
