THE FIRST TIME

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The first time should be savoured;
like keeping the tastiest morsel
until the last mouthful,
so it lingers there
and permeates into every recess.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Uncle Tony took me.
Coventry City; midweek game.
As we jostled through the turnstiles
and fought our way
up the concrete steps,
I felt more like a prisoner
being manhandled to my cell,
than at a game of football.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Then we entered the arena.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 The green of the grass
was Eden-beautiful;
smoking floodlights
reincarnated the night
as the chaperone-sky watched from above.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The streams of noise
and seas of swaying emotions
when the blue and white stripes
took the field
was intoxicating.
I breathed in deep lung-gorged
gasps of atmosphere.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The match was a three-three see-saw.
And, on the way back,
I made mental notes of the route
back to my second home.
