in the 60’s they called us ‘wags’
We were a city full of comedians
and quick of the mark with our gags.
And when it came to terrace humour,
Liverpool’s Spion Kop of course led the way.
And we took that humour to a new level in 1980,
when Grimsby Town came to Anfield to play.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Now Grimsby is more known as a fishing town,
with ports full of boats and ships.
So ‘you only sing when you’re fishin’ teased the Kopites
about their fans fishing trips.
But that was only the start,
for a match remembered in Kop folklore for its nonstop fun.
The FA Cup tie itself played only second fiddle,
as it was a game the reds very easily won.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The Kop gave fish type names to Liverpool’s players,
there was Kenny Dogfish and of course Jimmy Plaice.
You could see the smiles and the laughter clearly,
on many a Liverpool players face!
Phil Neal… well the Kop christened him Phil Seal,
but the pick of Liverpool’s midfield pack.
Had to be the name Terry Mackerel,
given brilliantly to our very own scouser Terry ‘Mac’
