The Forest Green Movement (…we’re so alternative)

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 what’s in a name…pray listen if you will
the friendly little club who play upon the hill
checked Wikipedia look what I found
natural connections reflecting our town
‘deciduous forest’ ‘nature’s vegetation”
‘a Green movement member’ ‘concerning conservation’
‘the colours of a school in the Phillipines’…
‘one of the colours of a village football team’
so much in keeping with the place where we live
even our football team’s alternative

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 setting hearts racing from Nailsworth to Stroud
the might of the Cotswolds fearless and proud
back in eighteen ninety no one would believe
the story and the glory of what they’d achieve
saw them win the Vase back in nineteen eighty two
lording it at Wembley when the dream came true
came home from Africa found a place to stay
opposite the ground where Forest Green play
steep old hill where the bus still crawls
hedgerows and treetops old stone walls
Barbour jackets green wellies ponies for your daughter
don’t mention hunting or you’ll get in deep water
not just a place where they sing when they’re farming
high above a hamlet all elegant and charming
not quite your average old footie location
clear streams flow by a tiny bus station
got to feel sorry for away-fans in a hurry
who end up in Forest Green … somewhere in Surrey
ancient old turnstiles now make room
for ‘Jim Harvey’s Army’ new stadium
high upon the hillside breathtaking views
so good to see them now they’re getting in the news
Blue Square Premier where’s it gonna stop?
look out Cheltenham they’re heading for the top

Notes

So hard to wish them good luck in the FA Cup 2nd Round this weekend ..when my esteemed Football Poets colleague , nostalgic railway enthusiast/ champion Rodborough allotment pioneer ( a certain Stuart Butler )
who is along with fellow football wordsmith Mark Merryman is a loyal Swindon Town fan..but wouldn’t it be fantastic for Nailsworth and Stroud and Laurie Lee (gor bless him guv) if they could get into the 3rd Round with a home tie agianst Chelsea, United or even the mighty Horsham should they triumph over Swansea ? ……dream on people of Gloucestershire!
