The Greatest Goal Ever On Paper

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 you had to be there to believe it
they say that he’d written the script
but some in the stands had their head in the hands
they were downcast and silent tight-lipped

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 we were three down at half time at Wembley
that moment we’ll never forget
the greatest goal ever on paper
there’s been nothing finer there yet

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 now the FA Cup Final has seen many things
but how we fought back to three three
when our hero just conjured that hat-trick
it was something amazing to see

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 but the goal we recall was still waiting
and it’s up there with all of the best
yes it’s still undefeated and won’t be repeated
you’re searching but still haven’t guessed!

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 there were seconds to go when our goalie
was sent off a penalty waved
as that very same striker just put on that jersey
and dived like a master and saved

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 when he rushed from his goalmouth the crowd stood as one
it started that old Wembley roar
and no one could stop him he won us the Cup
and hammered home goal number four

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 yes it shot like a rocket top corner
it left like a bullet in flight
as sweet as a peach it was way beyond reach
a hand-painted cartoon delight

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 and your heart it just went out to Carston
but that was the day we all knew
that Melchester’s favourite had done it at last
so to Rovers and Roy we thank you!

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 and you had to be there to believe it
for they say it was carved in the mind
and I reckon on paper it never will fade
I’ll remember that goal for all time.

Notes

EDITOR NOTE:
Roy Of The Rovers is still, to this day , the only player to score a hat-trick in a final and go in goal and save a penalty in the last minute. He also played for 50 years but never actualy grew old. But then anyone who scored 1000 goals, got kidnapped every other week, lost his leg in a helicopter crash – but somehow kept the same thick gorgeous blond hair to this very day ,definitely deserves it. He also y undertook an awful lot of work for charity often in deprived communites around Melchester but never boasted about it. And could he have done it all without loyal team-mates Blackie Gray and Tubby Morton in goal? One shudders to think. He was captain fantastic and a 100% squeaky clean goal-machine and role model was Roy. My all-time hero, my favoutiere bit of memorabilia of his is this:

In 1990 Roy Race and Gary Lineker produced a record called ‘Europe United’ (1992 mix) (Let’s Work Together). Europe United was described as a hot rocking heavy metal rap, featuring Gary Lineker and Roy on vocals and Roy on lead guitar. It was a double A side with the ‘Roy Of the Rovers Rap’ featuring MC Wade Locket on the flip side. Awesome! Ebay here I come.
