The Kop’s Last Stand

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The Kop’s Last Stand.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 And so sadly that day finally arrived at Anfield, on April 30th 1994.
The last game before Liverpool’s famous standing Kop, and then it would be no more.
Norwich City kindly played their part in the occasion, and effectively let us win the toss.
Though one City player obviously didn’t read the script, his name being Jeremy Goss !

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 This end of season game didn’t really mean much, nothing to play for, nothing really at stake.
But this day meant so much to the Spion Kop, in football terms it was to be their wake.
Famous legends from the past were brought together, and introduced to the Kop before the start of play.
And the Kop cheered loudly for everyone one of them, all of them heroes in their day.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Liverpool would kick towards the Kop in the second half, just like what Norwich had agreed.
History was there for the making, but no red men could score as Norwich didn’t concede.
So the last player to score in front of the Kop, alas it would not be a Liverpool players name.
But congratulations to Jeremy Goss for his great goal, and who has since modestly lived with that fame.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Well if the team let the fans down that day, the kopites famously just took it on the chin.
As they mercifully pleaded with the Norwich City side ‘You’re supposed to let us win’!
‘Sing when we’re losing’ also sang the Kop, though ‘Sing when we’re standing’ was sung in a different tone.
Amongst the fun a dig at the future was to be expected, after all the Kopites were about to lose their home.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 A one nil defeat and the game was over, and then for the final time the standing Kop took centre stage.
The Spion Kop’s last stand was on the way, though it’ll live on forever in footballs history page.
For over an hour after the game the Kopites stayed in their places, and belted out songs old and new.
And of course we remembered the 96 reds that couldn’t be there, so as for tears I saw quite a few.

Notes

Today (April 30th) is the 17th anniversay of Liverpool’s last game in front of the old standing Kop.

(Thanks Jeremy ..you party pooper!!)

Actually it was a brilliant goal from Goss and as the poem says he hasn’t been one to gloat and brag about it his part in the Kop’s folklore.
