The Legacy of Hillsborough

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 We were treated like dirt for so long, you can’t deny the facts.
Clubs only interested in taking their gate receipts to the max.
Shovelled about, pushed around that’s how it was back then.
We were boxed into a decrepit pit, just another crumbling pen.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 We aired our concerns in ‘88, both fans and club made a stand.
But you chose not to listen; you kept your head firmly in the sand.
We warned you about Hillsborough, what problems may lie in store.
Warnings that were brushed aside, our concerns you chose to ignore.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Fans caged in, fenced in or penned in you can call it what you will.
We took our chances every week, every time we followed that drill.
That’s the way we were conditioned, the only way we’d ever known.
But a tragedy soon awaited because the seeds were already sown.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Now I look at the Stadiums these days, all shiny brand new or renamed.
Filled to the brim with diluted support, everyone all refined and tamed.
This shouldn’t be the legacy of ‘Hillsborough’ a sport now ruined by greed.
As many a true fan are cast aside as they have too many mouths to feed.

Notes

It’s a shame really cos I reckon footy these days is out of the price range of many fans who deserve it more than anyone to be able to follow their team.

Many fans that was treated like shit week in week out in the 70’s/80’s don’t go the match anymore, it’s a luxury they can’t afford.

After Hillsborough that isn’t the way football should have gone.
