The legerdemain of laces

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 My laces;
Such a challenge in my youth
So it was left to the nimble fingered, to conjure the dark magic
Of knots and bows

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Then came the frustrations
Of self administration
Fumbling fingers floundering
And new found curses, like ‘bother’, a true summation

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Then it became routine
So routine that …
It meant nothing
It registered not

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Sometime hence
A generation came and went
That left laces fashionably undone –
The untied united

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 So what more can be said of laces?
In some cases
Velcro has usurped the tautology of tightness
Even in new fangled boots, dazzling with their whiteness

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 But now, my frustrations return
For though I have long since mastered the art
And put it to use on a daily basis –
This legerdemain of laces – sadly …

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 It is only for work, or leisure
Not, for the pleasure
To be gained from the game
Of footy

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 For this leathered old body
Can no longer do justice to leather clad feet
Whether it be studded entry from stadiums
Or kickabouts in the street

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 So my boots hang now
From their laces
And my body no longer can go through
It’s paces

Notes

What kicked all this off?

Reading a wonderful poem by Ray Bradbury – “With Love” – that opens with the line :

My father ties, I do not tie, my tie.
