The Money Men

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Oily, slick and insincere,
The football money men are here.
Riding roughshod through the town,
Turning soccer upside down.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Their first target – Division One
Now let’s rename it, oh what fun!
For the Premiership the outlook’s sunny;
Now let’s make shedloads of money.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 First let’s focus on the grounds;
Close the terracing in leaps and bounds.
Make every stadium all seater,
Now that’s what we call true theatre.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 The cost for fans of this decree?
A massive price hike for you and me.
Fans who’d been for twenty years
Were now priced out, reduced to tears.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The next goal for these moneyed knights,
To prioritise our t.v. rights.
The Beeb and I.T.V. were out
Now Murdoch’s Sky had all the clout.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Saturday football was in the past,
The fans, of course, consulted last.
Footie on Sunday, Monday, Thursday night,
Sky flexed its muscle, showed its might.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 This was great for the elite
Who thought the changes rather neat.
For the rest the outlook’s rotten,
Knowing they had been forgotten.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 All they can do, if they are able
Is scoff crumbs from the rich man’s table.
While the money men dine on caviare
The rest eat chips from The Star.

Notes

Around 12 years now of Sky and the Premiership and football in this country has never been so popular. But whilst the “outlook’s sunny” for teams in the top flight spare a thought ( please! ) for clubs in the lower leagues like my beloved Swindon Town who are struggling for their very existence. Am I bitter? No………..well ok just a bit!! Part 2 to follow shortly.
