The Pink

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Rushed out in double-quick time for
The homeward masses as they leave
Matches for another week, to devour
Results, Tables, Fixtures, Pools checks;
Thin, wizened men on street corners
Sell them speedily for 6d. by the bundle.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 First source of info, the internet of its’
Day; teams far distant brought to life
In a few lines of type on coloured paper.
The Pink, the Argus, the Green ‘un; names
To evoke bygone times, a brief column per
Game bringing instant joy – or muted despair.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Some have said it’s obsolete, this cherished
Saturday night institution of so many years;
Abandoned by local publishers who should
Know better…just how many more of our
Football traditions will become no more,
Before we decide that enough is enough.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 So, long live the ‘Pink’ – a few musty
Copies stashed away in lofts and attics;
Commemorations of an era long lost,
When they all played on the same day –
The high and mighty to the very lowly;
Sit down, sup your pint, and turn the pages…
