The Scoring’s In Safe Hands

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Whenever shoot-outs loom like night
You need to pick your sweetest
You’re better off with front-men first
You never choose the keepers

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 But still in spite of pedigree
Or what you’ve done before
Unlikely as it sounds to some
The best don’t always score –
For penalties are nervy things
No matter who you are
From Real Madrid to Wigan
They get to every star

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 And so it was at Harrogate
With ten already done
The bloke in gloves stepped up to prove
He’s Torquays favourite son
And having saved a couple
To swiflty boldy race
And send one past his opposite
Into its rightful place

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 How cool to see that keeper
Astonish team and fans
To say aloud at sudden death
“The scoring’s in safe hands!”

Notes

Andrew Marriott may have failed to fulfil the potential once detected by Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, both former employers, but Torquay’s near multi-instrumentalist(?) goalkeeper possessed the nerve to not only save two extra-time penalties for United in theirr FA Cup replay against Harrogate….., but also take the decisive sudden-death penalty which propelled his struggling side into the second round! Cool or what!.
